Which Island Will You Be Talking About and Why Did You Choose This Island?
Pianemo Islands in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. One of the wonders of Wonderful Indonesia, I think more people need to know of this beautiful place on earth.
How Many Days Would You Recommend Staying on This Island?
You cannot actually stay on the islands as they are more rocky outcrops (coral) in a National Park. However, you can stay nearby and explore the whole region of Raja Ampat. If you also enjoy snorkelling or diving then I think 5 days in the region would be a very good length of time to spend here.
What Is Your Favorite Thing About/Memory From Your Trip to This Island?
Getting to Pianemo is quite a struggle. From Bali or Jakarta you have to take two flights, then board a boat for another two hours to get to a resort. However, once you have arrived you are in paradise. What I will never forget is how we were taken to Pianemo and then hopped off the boat onto a jetty. Next thing I know I am climbing up razor sharp coral to get to the lookout. One wrong step and that’s that. But the views of the star shaped lagoon, the landscape of tiny coral islands, the unspoilt tropical beauty around us all made it worth it!
What Is Your “Can’t Miss” Activity on the Island? What activities/opportunities does this island provide?
The National Park is best enjoyed by boat. There is a very convenient stop where locals will sell fresh fish, seafood and refreshment right on the jetty. From here you can take the wooden steps to a secure lookout with the iconic views of Pianemo.
Best Restaurant/Place to Eat?
No restaurants here as people don’t actually live here!
What Surprised You About this Island?
I think Pianemo turned out one of the most beautiful places I ever set my eyes on. It great to see that so much unspoilt beauty still exists in this world.
Any Travel Advice for those considering this island as a destination (e.g., where to stay, ease of getting there, how best to get around, language, money)?
We stayed at the Raja Ampat Dive Lodge nearby. The lodge organises tours to Pianemo and other locations in the area. It’s a pricy accommodation but that’s mostly due to the remoteness and the fact that you are incredibly comfortable despite the remoteness. The lodge will also provide boat transfer from port to new arrivals and diving trips in what must be one of the most pristine diving spots in the whole world.
