Friday Finds on Mackinaw Road: Frank Lloyd Wright tours, AirZoo, and a Beach Cabin update
Hello and Happy Monday! Once again, I missed Friday, so this is coming a few days late. We had a school play and soccer followed by some sick kiddos at home, but here’s hoping that everyone is on the up-and-up now. I hope that you all had a relaxing weekend and are ready for a productive week that will hopefully fly by! Spring is in the air, which means we’re ready to get out of the house~ (at least I am! The 5 year old wanted to play dinosaurs in the basement on a 60 degree day… and the dinosaurs can’t even talk… just growl). While I did convince him to go outside, I know that there are still those March days ahead with flurries in the air or those much publicized April showers. As such, I thought it might be fun to talk about some indoor activities for spring.

I recently took a tour of the Meyer May house in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I expected to like the tour and gain some knowledge, but I was surprised how much I learned not only about Frank Lloyd Wright but also about the Meyer May family, Grand Rapids, the renovation process (right down to refurbishing books), and Heritage Hill. If you are in the area, it most definitely is worth the visit which is about 90 minutes long, including an informational video. Even better– it is free! You can check out the details here. I would love to incorporate visiting as many Frank Lloyd Wright houses into our travel as possible. His process and vision are incredibly intriguing and I have a feeling that each house is unique in its own right! This truly would fit with my Instagram tagline: “Travel-Inspired Design, One Trip at a Time.”
While I likely would not bring my children to the Meyer May house, I would absolutely bring them to the Air Zoo. This is one of my favorite museums/kids’ spots in West/Southwest Michigan. If you are unable to make this a destination spot but are traveling through Kalamazoo on I-94 with children, Air Zoo is a great place to take a break. There are planes in the building as well as several rides and simulators. No matter the age of your children, there are definite learning opportunities as well. There is a fee but don’t forget to check to see if there is any reciprocation with museums with whom you already have a membership. If you live in the area, they also offer Spring Break camps.
And lastly, the Beach Cabin update… We are slowly but surely making progress. I’m still working through whether or not this is a “cottage” or “cabin” or “Northern Michigan-inspired” or “California-inspired”… I think it’s just going to somehow be all of them. Here is a design board that I created after picking up some rugs at World Market’s rug sale. We want the Beach Cabin to be comfortable and not fussy… a place you can just run in and out of without much worry at all.. After all, that is what life at the beach is meant to be.
