A Hotel-Inspired Guest Room Makeover
Hello! I hope you all had a nice weekend!!
If you follow Mackinaw Road on Instagram, you know that it was a goal to hold off fixing up the Beach Cabin between Memorial Day and Labor Day… but we just couldn’t help ourselves when it came to the bonus guest room. Part of it stemmed from the kids wanting to do a week of sailing school (and my husband texting me all of the ideas in case I was bored- haha!).
The bonus guest room was already cute when we moved in… but it felt sort of like what it was… an extra, hidden room. We really wanted it to feel more special… like it was a real “bonus” to get to stay there. We moved the patio furniture from our house to the deck just outside the room. As it should be when you are on a Beach Cabin visit, we wanted our guests to have a place to slowly wake up and have a cup of coffee before joining our chaos upstairs.
The walls were painted white, the headboard gray, and the floors navy. We added shoe molding (which our contractor matched without even bringing in a sample piece- he’s amazing!), some beautiful curtains from a friend, and new bedding (if you read this post, it probably looks familiar… when I find something I like, I just go with it ;).
We also added a coffee station to make the room feel like more of a respite… Let me tell you a little NYC story… Upon arrival, our hotel room did not have a coffee maker… what?!?! We eventually figured out that we could call down and have one brought up (and the best husband ever brought coffee up in the meantime). But, the point of that story is that no one should have to talk or function outside of their home or hotel room without that first cup of coffee. Hence, our hotel-inspired coffee station. (If you want to read what we actually did in New York outside of drinking coffee, you can check it out here.)
The bonus bedroom was originally intended for guests (there is even a private entrance and a secret parking spot). However, as we were working on the room, a different plan started to formulate in our heads… Maybe we should stay down there and let our guests stay upstairs with the kids… Hmmm…

I had to check out your blog after seeing the name “Mackinaw” in our Pinterest tribe. I grew up in the E.U.P. and now live in Wilmington, NC. So, I’m very familiar with everything “Mackinac” related. Love the makeover! Very cute. You definitely made it feel more special.
