5 Plants To Buy Now
The Intro
Spring is here!!! And, my non-green thumb is in plant mode. As an attempt avoid being too overwhelming, I’ve narrowed it down to 5 Plants To Buy Now. A recap of what happened last Sunday…
But, I have to believe that we are good to go from here on out (with the occasional need to cover for frost). I love, love, love Kelly from The Lilypad Cottage‘s idea of buying plants for planters that you can later transfer to your yard. (She has so, so may good tips! Here are some fabulous ideas for flower boxes!) It’s nice to be able to get multiple uses out of plant purchases!
Based on this approach, I narrowed down my choices to five plants that not only would look great in our front porch planters but would also transfer (fingers crossed!) easily to our yard or into our home. (As with most things, this is just my opinion and plan. You’ll need to research what plants will do best in your climate and yard before buying.)
The Plants
Rhododendron. Every spring our rhododendron blooms, and it makes the front of our house pop. I love all things rhododendron. The leaves, the hardiness, and the colors. Ours is a bright pink. The leaves stay on all winter and add a nice dimension to the yard. I wish that the flowers stayed longer but the fact that the leaves are pretty gives it top ranking with me.
Azaleas. Oh my goodness. I have been so envious of our neighbors’ azaleas since we moved in. They are so bright and cheerful! The azaleas are such a nice splash of color! When I spotted the azaleas at our local greenhouse, I knew that they would be a perfect addition to our front stoop this spring. When the blooms are gone, I’ll plant them and have a lovely garden for next spring.
Hydrangeas. We have bountiful hydrangeas in our backyard. They are the blue flowing variety (very professional terms, I know). Not only are the bushes amazing, but the flowers stay on the plants for quite a long time period. And, when invited to BBQ’s, your hostess gift is just a few steps and a quick snip away. Talk about multiple uses for plants! If I do replace the azaleas this year, it will likely be with limelight hydrangeas for later transfer to the Beach Cabin.
Peonies. They just smell so good! Their brilliant blooms are the stuff that spring is made of. As with the hydrangeas, these are great flowers to have in hand when going to someone’s house for dinner. I would think that this may be the riskiest plant to put in a planter to transfer as the blooms are heavy and do tend to fall downward. Another (and probably better) possibility is to get a smaller peony plant and put it in a pretty white ceramic pot inside your house while it is in bloom, let its fragrance perfume your house, and when it is finished blooming, transfer it outside.
Florica Codylines. Okay, now it sounds like I know what I’m talking about. Just forget the fact that I googled “red long leaf plant” – haha! On a whim, I bought this plant last year. Two actually. They flanked either side of our front door. This plant was a superstar! It made it through the entire summer and well into fall. It’s leaves changed ever so slightly throughout the seasons. These subtle color changes were just what we needed to keep it interesting. I had the best intentions to bring the plants inside before it snowed. I didn’t. They died. But, if I had, they would have been a great addition to our indoor house plants. Then, I could have stuck them back outside in a few weeks. What a good plant investment!
Happy Planting/Buying a Plant and Plopping it in a Planter (as I will be doing!), Everyone!
