Modern Traditional Christmas Kitchen
Hello and Happy Holidays! This time of year is always a whirlwind with holiday gatherings, kids’ concerts, school parties, and all of the fun!!! I’m currently trying, trying, trying to keep it simple in our Modern Traditional Christmas Kitchen. Also, admittedly, I ran out of time with my refusal to decorate until after Thanksgiving and the shorter span of weeks between it and Christmas. Sometimes routines are good, sometimes not so much. Oh well!
Since the cabinets are the perfect green, it didn’t seem necessary to add a ton of decorations. This definitely helped to keep with the goal of a simple Christmas kitchen. Incorporating some greenery here and there was really all that was needed. At least this year. Until I figure it out.
While we will likely eventually follow the crowd and add a piece of vintage (-like) artwork on the open shelf, for now a little snowman scene seems like an understated yet spirited piece. *Not shown, the Elf on the Shelf who got stuck in the Moscow Mule mugs for a few days. (Every year, I have to remind our kids that our Elf is REALLY lazy and likely won’t move every day- haha!)
A vase with a few faux branches was just what we needed for a simple Christmas kitchen table. As much as I love the smell of real branches, I don’t love them in our food as much so decided to go the fake route. As we do, Christmas cards will be put up around the windows as they come in. It really is the most magical mail time of the year!
By the milk door a simple wreath and a jug (perfect for mixing a holiday cocktail to bring to neighbor dinners) were really all that was needed. A white feather tree added just a touch of Christmas whimsy.
The hood is one of the favorite features in our kitchen and, as such, was left to be fabulous all on its own. Maybe, MAYBE next year, some wood cut garland or dried orange slices or tiny brass bells may make an appearance. We will see.
Another cozy feature is our black tea pot. A preferred activity during these long Michigan winters is a sip of tea or coffee mid-afternoon. The addition of a Christmas embroidered towel and this space is done. (Just ignore the wrinkles.)
Pomegranates are more Christmas-y, but every year we are gifted the most beautiful red, honey crisp apples. So, I guess in our family honey crisp apples are also a sign of the holiday season. They help to pick up the subtle red lines in the Christmas towel on the dishwasher. And that’s about as red and green as I could muster in this Modern Traditional Christmas kitchen! I also added a ribbon to match the bow tied on the tree on the other side of the sink. This is such an easy way to incorporate holiday decorations.
We typically throw some garland up on the windowsill, but this year when I put it up, it felt unnecessary, so we are just keeping the space clear for festive food and cookie storage. And this sweet vignette. Lauren Liess had the most amazing idea to place poinsettias in a vase. I like them so much more this way! (Find our favorite appetizer for the holidays in my post here.)
I think that’s about it for now! Happy Holidays!!!
