Cozy Winter Living Room
Hi again! I’m so excited to share our Cozy Winter Living Room with you. As always, I just couldn’t get into the Christmas spirit until after Thanksgiving. The stomach bug struck our house the week before Thanksgiving so that was also a definite conspirator in keeping Christmas at bay until the Friday after. And then there were only 3 weeks until Christmas, so the time has come and gone to share our Christmas decorations. (Although, if you look closely, there are still some decorations that can pull double duty as Christmas and winter decor. Maybe that’s why my decorations bins are always such as disaster… some decorations trickle in every month while others trickle out… Oh well!) Anyway… I think this Cozy Winter Living Room is even better than sharing our Christmas Living Room! Especially since this will last for 2 months instead of 3 weeks.
Right before the holidays I decided to paint our living room white. It all started when R moved the desk that was in the back corner to our son’s room. It seemed like the perfect time to add curtains surrounding the French doors. But then the curtains I chose didn’t really go with the wall color. Soooo, the next day (haha!) I headed to the paint store to choose the perfect white. For a day or two, our living room looked something like this…
And a progress shot…
After the help of an amazing friend and a couple of late nights, the room was painted in two days. Yay! I could have probably debated white paint for months, but fortunately, the impending holiday was just the motivation needed to get it done. (You can see a “before” shot of the living room here. Or, a “before-before” tour here.)
I ended up keeping the garland and the ski painting up. After all, often times, the good ski snow doesn’t make an appearance until January and February in Michigan. I love the height and interest that the tapers and taper holders provide.
Remember the curtains I mentioned before? Well, I ended up changing my mind about them and ordered the white color. We used a black satin curtain rod and I had big plans to add some clip rings too. As with hanging the curtain rod (which was frankly not the easiest due to the door frame- we think), choosing how to hang the actual curtains wasn’t as straightforward as I had anticipated. Although, choosing how to hang the curtains was a bit more fun. Here were the options:
Option 1- Clip the curtains with the clip showing. You can find examples of this look and the curtain rod hanging tutorial that we found to be super helpful here.
Option 2- Clip the curtains with the clip hidden.
Option 3- Skip the clips and use the pole loops.
You can see Options 2 & 3 in the photos above and below. Since I didn’t plan ahead with the clips and ran out, I ended up hanging both options. I was fairly certain that I was going to go with the clips due to the detail they add. However, once I had both options up (and my Instagram poll was pretty even- thank you to all who participated!), I actually found myself leaning toward the pole loops because of the height illusion they give. I think I’ll just stare at it for the next week before deciding.
The cozy Christmas living room wouldn’t be complete without a few (or 5) new pillows and a cozy throw to hunker down with for the snowy days ahead. Some pinecones, birch, and candles never hurt when decorating for winter either!
Happy Hibernating!
