Mackinaw Road Monday: The Count, Glamping, & More
Hi and Happy Friday! This week, we will be covering the topics of affordable art, historical fiction, a super fun concert venue, glamping in Michigan, and more lighting. This is the last post on Friday (well… maybe not the last one… but I think I’ll be switching to Mondays for all things miscellaneous on Mackinaw Road … how is that for some alliteration?) We will see how it works. But, for now, Welcome to Mackinaw Road Monday… on Friday ….

I’m guessing that most people’s first choice for their homes is an original painting or photograph, but sometimes, that just doesn’t fit into the budget. Or, perhaps it is going above a child’s bed, which based on the foot prints on the wall, might be a risky endeavor. Hypothetically speaking, of course 😉 Or, maybe you would like more artwork on the walls in a rental. We’ve used Juniper Print Shop for the prints above the beds in our son’s room. (All additional sources are listed in this post.) I ended up purchasing the digital downloads, printing them on mpix , and opting for the linen texture. I then bought some frames from Michaels and we were done! I purchased DINO and FERRIS during a buy 2, get 1 free sale, so I have this lovely download waiting for me! I’m thinking I will use it in the Beach Cabin somewhere. Or even on the wall in the eating nook of the kitchen.
I completely dragged my feet finishing A Gentleman in Moscow, another fabulous recommendation from my neighbor. (Who needs to go to the library when you can just run next door and have a wide selection and someone who recommends such great books?) Anyway, I really, really wanted to know how it all ended (it’s good!) but was going to miss Count Rostov and The Metropol, so I was reading only a few pages the last few nights to finish it up. This story is set in Russia and spans the 1900s into the 1950s. It is about a man who is put under house arrest at a hotel in Moscow, the friendships he makes, the positive attitude, the gentlemanly manners, and… well, I shouldn’t say too much. It is a book that made me laugh, get a little teary, and had me stalling at the end so I didn’t have to say good-bye to one of the best cast of characters I’ve come across.
On a completely different note, I think I have found my favorite winter concert spot. The Listening Room, with 200 seats and tables in between (and booths in back), provides an intimate setting and great acoustics in which to enjoy a show. We saw We Banjo 3 and had so much fun! At times, it felt as though we were enjoying the band in an Irish bar!
If you are already dreaming of and making plans for summer like I am, you may want to check out The Fields of Michigan in South Haven, Michigan. I am not a camper but glamping seems like it could be my thing! This setting looks like it would be great for a family and friends get away or a girls’ weekend. I’m guessing that autumn is a particularly lovely time to visit. (Note: I haven’t been glamping here (or anywhere) but would love to try it!)
I know I keep talking about how little light we get in Michigan in the winter, but it’s true. Our living room doesn’t have any overhead lighting and unless we want to tear our plaster ceiling apart to add it (we don’t), we need to incorporate lighting in more creative ways. We have a floor lamp that we have had for probably 14 years that I would love to replace. It turns out that it’s more difficult to find floor lamps that I like for a traditional home than I had anticipated. If you’re in the same boat, I have a Lighting Board over on Pinterest that I am slowly adding to. It feels like this could be an investment purchase, so I want to make sure I get it right. While we’re talking Pinterest, sometimes I’m drawn to styles that don’t match our current home but that I definitely want to save. So, I’ve created boards for Coastal Farmhouse Style , City Style | Apartment Love, Aframe Cabin, and others. Or, you can look at all of the boards by clicking here. I should probably make a Glamping Board too!
Have a great weekend!
