Beach Cottage Loft Ideas
Hi there! We are looking at updating the cottage loft this spring. I am so excited! I can’t wait to show you where it all started and where we are (hopefully) going in this Beach Cottage Loft Ideas post.

The Before, The Present, and The Future
You may remember that when we purchased the Beach Cottage, the room looked like this.
A few years ago, I painted the floors and two of the walls, added new bedding and decor, and did some rearranging.
Our contractor also made this adorable ship to camouflage the bathroom pipe going up to the roof. You can read all about the makeover details here.
While our kids still use the boat on occasion, they are quickly growing out of it. Cue all the tears.
I have been wondering about adding a half bath up there for awhile now. Mainly, this is because anytime we hear the pitter-patter of feet at 2am, we fly out of bed and run to help the kids down the stairs. Not the best way to wake up.
The reason I thought it might be semi-possible is because of that bathroom pipe. And the fact that the main floor bathroom is directly below this space. Before Christmas, I met with our plumber, and he was very encouraging and threw in some really great ideas that I hadn’t even thought about.
While this won’t be a luxury bathroom by any stretch of the imagination, it will certainly add more function to the cottage loft. I’m also hoping to incorporate some “form” too.
Beach Cottage Loft Ideas: The Inspiration
I’m pulling my inspiration from two main sources (and then probably others in my subconscious too). In case you aren’t already following along, Kelly from The Lilypad Cottage is finishing their pool house loft. It is turning out beautifully, as does every room she works on! I just can’t get enough of her coastal designs. I also keep going back to the DDCO Cabin Main Bedroom and Ensuite Bath. It is sooo good! I think that the layout could be very similar to what our layout will look like too.
Beach Cottage Loft Ideas: Possible Bathroom Designs
Here are some of the options that I’ve put together. By now, we all know that it will likely turn out to be “none of the above.” We also know that I haven’t measured so this is purely aesthetic at this point. In addition, I’ve completely disregarded the budget. Stay tuned, though, because as the design gets narrowed down, I will certainly be operating within one and finding lookalikes if necessary to remain within it.
I adore the striped concrete hex tiles in the design below. Paired with a blue vanity, this could give us the perfect coastal half bath!

The swiss cross tile adds a cabin feel which, paired with the blue vanity, could be just right for the Beach Cabin.

I also recently remembered that I was too lazy to try to move a mid-century dresser that we inherited with the cottage. I ended up just throwing it into the closet up there. If the layout ends up working out so that I could use it as a vanity in the bathroom, I will be so happy! I’m thinking that I could do a rectangular vessel sink and maybe won’t even need a stone countertop. If we go the drop in sink route, then I will likely need a countertop. We actually have quite a bit of marble remnants that I might be able to incorporate. We will see! I would love to still use the tile. I think it could work! (Let’s pretend that I added some brass faucets in this board below.)

Am I getting too far away from the coastal look? Could I tie it back in by painting the dresser white and adding some blue striped tile? Welcome to my brain- haha!

Beach Cottage Loft Ideas: Built-In Beds
I could do this all day, but we’d better move on to the beds. I love the idea of built in beds! The beds from our Airbnb stay were lovely and the room underneath for a storage basket was really nice too.
Kelly’s built in beds are perfect as well! I love the half walls for the rows of beds to let more light into the overall space.
That’s it for now! I met with our contractor earlier this week and it looks like we can make this happen! It won’t be the most spacious bathroom, but I think it will be both cute and functional! Fingers crossed that there is some room left in the budget for the built-in beds! I’m really excited and will keep you posted!
