Mackinaw Road: October Updates
Hi there! October flew by and I’m not quite sure what we did. We celebrated a birthday, watched our kids participate in various activities (and uber-ed them everywhere), and made some interior design decisions. Oh, and celebrated Halloween. And Diwali. In one day.

October Updates: R’s Birthday
R’s birthday was super fun. There was a toddler/big kid dance party that involved a free pass for jumping on the new sofa. (I am happy to report that it survived unscathed.)
I made a pumpkin layer cake from the NYT recipes section. It is pictured almost finished above. This was the first time that I was able to successfully make a caramel sauce. It was amazing and I will likely use the recipe in place of other caramel recipes in the future.
We all purchased a propane-fueled fire pit as a group gift. I love that the propane tank is hidden right in the fire pit (as opposed to running a hose and hiding the tank somewhere else). I was surprised by the nice amount of heat it gave off.
October Updates: Wallpaper & Molding
The wallpaper I purchased in September is getting installed! I spent an hour or so prepping the space by sanding uneven bumps (as much as is possible in a 1920s home) and using a paint brush to apply wall size to the walls (this will make it easier for the next owner to remove it if they don’t like my dream wallpaper). More photos coming super soon!
Gretchen came over and we taped out potential molding options in the dining room. You can see in the photo above that we currently have only a chair rail, which we will keep. I’m also planning to paint the walls white. Oh, and we decided that a chandelier was a good idea too. The goal is to have the picture frame molding and paint finished by Thanksgiving. The lighting will take longer. There currently isn’t any ceiling lighting in the dining room. I’m slightly encouraged that there is a light switch that doesn’t seem to be connected to anything. Maybe there once was a chandelier in the dining room? We will see.
October Updates: October 31
Family costumes are a STRUGGLE at our house. This year, we all went our own ways. The 8-year old dressed as Lionel Messi. I was so pleased with the pricing and quality of his outfit (uniform) that I found on Etsy. Our 11-year old in fact did do a group costume (she was just savvy enough to leave the rest of us out of it). She was an army pilot. We ordered the costume and then also purchased the boots (which can be worn for other occasions as well) and aviators separately.
I had fun decorating our kitchen shelves for Halloween. You can read and see more in this post.
Diwali is a festival of lights. We went to Ann Arbor to celebrate with family. My sister and brother-in-law thought of every last detail. It was a gorgeous celebration complete with lovely outfits from my brother-in-law’s mom. The food was very good too- there was even a dosa station! So fun!!
Last (and definitely least), it got cold. I love this sweater for the colder months. It can be dressed up or dressed down or fall somewhere in between.
