Mackinaw Road: November Updates
As happens this time of year, the days are flying by and we are already into December- yikes and yay! Here is what November looked like for us. It included putting up Picture Frame Molding, Thanksgiving and The Day After (with the smartest pie I’ve come across), Christmas Shopping, and Christmas Decorating.

Picture Frame Molding- Another Tidbit
One of the biggest activities this month was putting up the picture frame molding in the dining room and painting it white. I love how it turned out and had so much fun figuring it all out with Gretchen. I think it looks like it has always been here and makes the room look larger and more elegant. In other words, a huge pat on the back from myself- lol! I gave some details about how it was done in this post. Another tip is that we used the Rule of Thirds. Now, I actually have no idea what the Rule of Thirds is, but, in my mind, it involved only three “highlights” on each wall. For example. On the wall pictured, there are two windows, so we decided to do only one big square-ish (instead of two smaller rectangles). The wall could be divided into thirds (1- window & molding underneath), 2- larger box molding on the top and bottom of the chair rail, 3- window & molding underneath). Does this make sense? This is why there won’t be a tutorial- haha. I just thought it might be a helpful hint since I debated this for days.
November Updates- Thanksgiving
We had so much fun hosting Thanksgiving this year! You can read all about the Holiday Table here. It could easily be transformed into a Christmas table, too. We had my grandmother’s Green Bean Casserole. I’ll be making it for Christmas as well! You can find that recipe here. We had a little pie party the next day. My sister and brother-in-law brought a genius pie from a bakery in the Detroit area called Achatz Handmade Pie Co. I love pecan pie but about 3 bites in and I’m on sugar overload. Pumpkin Pie is good but not super sweet. This pie is the perfect combination. It has a thinner layer of pecan pie followed by a little pumpkin pie layer and is then topped with whipped cream. YUM!
November Updates- Christmas Gifting
I’m still working on the Christmas gifts but thought it might be helpful to link all of my 2021 Gift Guides in one place. That place is here.
Christmas Garlands
There was a flurry of activity on Thanksgiving weekend chopping down our tree and putting up the faux one too. Better pictures coming soon! I put up an old Crate & Barrel garland, layered with these beautiful brass bells from last year at The Counting House.
I also hung the Eucalyptus Garland that I’ve had for years now on the staircase. (Here is a similar one.) I added some black ribbon, which I think gives it an elegant feel and goes with a new plaid pillow that I purchased with a black velvet backing (it’s my new favorite!). I’m attempting to mix and match some plaids this Christmas. Fingers crossed it works.
I kept our cedar garland on the mantel. (Here is a similar one.) You can see it layered on the mantel in this photo from last year. I kept it a bit more simple this year and chose not the layer it (just yet… stay tuned…maybe). You can find the sources from last year here.
Have a Great Week!
