Colonial Home: Kid Bedrooms
While our primary bedroom and bathroom remain untouched despite the need for updates, our kids’ bedrooms keep getting tweaked. I’ll go into more detail below but thought it might be fun to share some kid bedroom updates that have happened over the past year or so. I’ve also included progress photos as we take a little trip down memory lane. In general, our colonial home changes are a slow burn with adjustments made here and there. Let’s begin our tour.

Tween Bedroom
Our daughter’s room has changed considerably throughout the years. When we first moved into our colonial home, our daughter was only 3 years old. The walls were a lovely salmon color with a navy polka dot ruffle duvet and the most beautiful chandelier. You can see a glimpse across the hall from the home office.
We then went with a beachy vintage vibe. Sources can be found here.
Then a little modern twist that you can read about in this post.
And while our tween could handle having a bubble light above her bed, we didn’t fully take into account her brother. So, after about two months, we needed to replace the light above her bed, this time going with a softer, less breakable material. I love this woven chandelier!
I also painted her aqua dresser to match the bed and purchased new hardware. Not much in this room has been straight forward, including the dresser hardware. I measured (ish) the distance between the holes and ordered these beautiful pulls. When they arrived, I discovered that the dresser holes were actually a hair under the 3″ mark and weren’t going to work. I decided I needed to find adjustable pulls to account for any measurement flaws and actually found these at Home Depot. Of course, because the dresser is old, we needed to buy longer screws from the hardware store. But THEN it was complete.
This throw pillow in neutral adds a nice touch. I also like the lumbar pillow‘s size and velvet-like texture. It actually has a tiger on the other side but the price was good enough that a quick flip of the pillow was an easy fix.
I brought home the wood accent stools from the cottage. I really like the addition of both the ficus Audrey plant and the zz plant in our tween’s room. I’m not sure how the ficus is going to do in the glass but I couldn’t find a planter for it when I was taking these photos. I’ll be on the lookout for planters in the coming weeks.
The 8 Year Old’s Bedroom
Our son’s room has slowly adjusted throughout the years as well. I don’t have a photo of the nursery but it had silver grey walls with an accent wall of wide horizontal stripes (as we did in 2013). Eventually, we added twin beds and a shiplap accent wall. He went through a Dino phase.
Then we all went through a California phase. (It’s ongoing.)
And when his sister got the queen bed, he inherited her full size bed.

We added a geometric rug and I like how it makes the room feel a little older to me. The chair and reading light with some plants round out his small update.
I mentioned previously that I wanted to reupholster a headboard for the full size bed. However, when I brought it up from the basement, it was too long for the space and overlapped the window. Oh well. I think it looks fine for now.
I’m not sure I’ll ever get tired of the Pendleton Quilt.
Crew clearly feels right at home in this room. A matching dog bed might be on our shopping list.
Have a great weekend!!!
