Art Series: Affordable Photography for the Home
Affordable Photography for the Home
I recently got to help a friend choose some artwork for her home. It was so much fun! I even found some for myself- haha! She really wanted to add some affordable photography pieces and I fully supported that.

My friend and I agreed that we wanted the photography to be fun and also have some meaning to their family. Like our family, they spend quite a bit of time on the Michigan shoreline in the summer and have vacationed in California numerous times. Naturally, a coastal vibe was necessary. While their home leans midcentury modern, I think that the artwork we chose is incredibly versatile and could easily fit within most design styles.
Perhaps the trickiest part was determining what to put on a huge wall in their living room. We moved the furniture in the room around a few (okay, many) times. We cursed the room, we adored the room, and finally we landed on the form and function layout. This left us with about a 7-foot long section of wall to cover. This large of a print/piece of artwork can get pricey quickly. This is where Juniper Print Shop came in and saved the day.
JUNIPER PRINT SHOP
I have been following Juniper Print Shop on Instagram for several years now. (I had purchased FERRIS and DINO previously. I also purchased the downloadable version of AUGUST that I am hoping to print out for the Beach Cabin this summer.)
Juniper Print Shop offers large versions of their selections such that they fit into IKEA frames for a very reasonable price given the size. I believe that the frames are around $40. They even have a tutorial on their website about how to assemble the frame. So if you’re more of a video tutorial kind of person versus an IKEA manual type person, (i.e., 99.9% of us I’m guessing) this could work well for you! We narrowed the photography selection down to BIXBY and BIG SUR. They had been to both locations. We ended up going with BIXBY in the 40×55 size. She also surprised me (pleasantly) and ordered the 16×20 of SPLASH, which goes perfectly in the entryway. Like I said, we both love a good lake/ocean scene.
SOCIETY 6
To play off some of the colors and vibes in the living room, we also ordered Summer Orange Tree from Society 6. There are several different framing options. We ended up with the 20×20 in a black frame. I know this was not (supposed to be) about me, but it makes me so happy when I walk into her living room and see that photo.
ETSY
We also became slightly enthralled with Slim Aaron’s photography. This scene of a Lake Tahoe pool party goes perfectly with our northern California vibe. And, as my friend observed, if guests can’t smile about this fun scene, do you really want them in your house anyway?!? Well said. It’s on the wish list for future purchases.
ONE KINGS LANE
(NOTE: These prints from One King’s Lane are slightly more pricey but still within reason considering the amount that one can spend on art.)
I love this Slim Aaron’s print (Tennis in the Bahamas) for our own house. It’s on my list.
Having grown up on James Bond movies, Shaken Not Stirred by Peter Ruck is also very much a top contender for the dining room or at the top of the staircase. This is another one that just makes me smile when I look at it.
AFFORDABLE PHOTOGRAPHY
There you have it—Fairly affordable photography pieces for your home. Even if you don’t love these choices as much as we do, I hope that you are able to discover something that you love and that makes you smile! After all, I think that’s what art should do.
