Colonial Home Primary Bedroom

*This post began as a bedroom lighting article. However, nothing is quite that simple with me when it comes to decorating. Read on for the bedroom lighting I love and the after-effects of changing out a light in our Colonial Home Primary Bedroom

Primary Bedroom Lighting

When we moved into our house almost 9 years ago, we had a 6 month old and a 3 year old. We put as much time, effort, and thought into our selections as we could. That said, some items went by the wayside and have not really been picked up since. One such item is our bedroom lighting. This is what our room looked like almost a year ago.

The Thought Process

R’s mantra is that we don’t need to spend much money on our bedroom and bathroom since we are the only ones who see them. I go back and forth between that logic and wanting our bedroom to be a relaxing place to be. In the end, though, we really do spend such minimal time in this room. (R keeps asking when I’m going to sit at the desk I moved in here- haha! Probably never.)

That said, there is a part of the room that other people actually do see. And that is the ceiling light. The incorrectly sized light that we picked up because we needed something. Quick. Likely with a baby and toddler in tow.

I always winced a bit when I pulled up the driveway at night and R had turned on the bedroom light without shutting the blinds. If that seems like an odd request to have (please shut the blinds if you are going to turn on the light), it is. And also unreasonable. It seemed like it should be an easy fix.

The (Limited) Options

I hopped on to Pinterest and found that I was at a disadvantage without a vaulted ceiling or even a high ceiling. Why did it seem like every bedroom I gravitated toward was vaulted?!? Ugh. Vaulting a ceiling was clearly not on the list for what was supposed to be a quick little light change.

I also realized that, given the ceiling light’s position and how we walk through the room, pendants and chandeliers were not options. Another consideration was that the light is in the middle of the room, but our bed is not lined up with the light due to our closet door. A chandelier might only accentuate that fact.

Our son’s room has a drum shade in it and our daughter has this pendant, so I really wanted something different. Any sort of exposed bulb was out because they can trigger migraines for me.

Another factor I mulled over was our room’s current style. We inherited much of the furniture pieces, which I think are beautiful, quality furnishings that lean toward traditional. Going with a traditional ceiling light would have been good, but I was wanting to mix things up a bit. But how? Modern? Coastal?

The Answer

Of course, when I saw this flushmount, I knew I had found the answer. Isn’t it lovely? I love the honeycomb pattern. Unfortunately, it was out of the budget for the project. But, this is the light that solidified that capiz was a new obsession.

I tried all of my search tricks and was searching in circles. Then, I thought, the bed is from Restoration Hardware and I like that look, so maybe I’ll just browse their website. And that is where I found this beautiful light. It was a bit smaller and didn’t have the honeycomb pattern but it was hardly a second place prize. It is gorgeous!

The story doesn’t end there, though. Hahaha- if you’ve spent any amount of time with me, you knew it wouldn’t! There were three finish options: lacquered burnished brash (a classic combination with the capiz), matte black (a beautiful way to add contrast and you know I love a little contrast), and matte silver. Matte Silver gets its own sentences. More and more, I find myself leaning toward monochromatic tones for rooms. I think that a monochromatic(ish) room can translate into a tranquil space and I decided that is what I wanted for this room.

The Story Continues

Once the light was up, the room still didn’t feel quite right. While I loved the Ralph Lauren duvet cover and thought it went great in the room, it really didn’t go with the rest of the house. The other rooms in our home felt lighter and airier than our primary bedroom. I wondered about painting the walls white or purchasing a new rug. Fortunately, before I could act on those impulses, I found a beautiful linen striped duvet cover and matching shams. It definitely went with the rest of our house. So much so that I decided if the duvet cover didn’t end up working in our bedroom, I could think of three other places it could work (either at home or at the Beach Cabin). That thinking was unnecessary, though, because the linen duvet cover was just what the room was missing. A few inexpensive velvet pillows, a plaid lumbar, and a faux fur throw blanket at the end of the bed and the room is ready for winter!
