Gifts for Traveling Kids: Elementary Age version
Hi there! As much as I love fall, it’s time to admit that winter appears to be here to stay. And, let’s face it, the holidays are a magical time. While we won’t be traveling too much over the holiday months, that doesn’t stop the kids (and us) from dreaming of days on the road. Here are a few gift ideas to keep the kids occupied at home and while traveling. **This post contains affiliate links. Also, we haven’t tried all of the products but just think that they look like great gifts.

A Thanksgiving Table Setting
Hi and Welcome to Mackinaw Road, A Lifestyle Blog focusing on travel and home. Today I’m going to share one of my favorite things… setting a holiday table! Many, many thanks to my wonderful friend, Jen, who took all of these lovely photographs! Fall is one of the shortest seasons – particularly short this year in Michigan!- but I just love it! It truly lends itself to cozy and classic (more of my favorites).

ORC Week 6: The Beach Cabin Sleeper Attic Makeover
Hello and Happy Friday! I am feeling especially cheerful as we finished up and photographed the attic makeover this week for the One Room Challenge. It has been a wonderful experience to participate in the ORC with such a talented and supportive group. Check out all of the final projects here. Many thanks to Linda from Calling It Home and media partner Better Homes & Gardens for hosting this lovely event! The goal for the Beach Cabin Attic was to make it special for kids but also livable for adults. We rent the Beach Cabin for a few weeks each summer and the families that visit vary in their needs…

Friday Finds on Mackinaw Road: Cozy Sweaters
Hi All~ Welcome to Friday Finds on Mackinaw Road on a Sunday night— because it has just been one of those weeks 😉 Today I’m talking all things sweaters (and sweatshirts)! Sweaters pack super well for trips and since we live in Michigan and also went to San Fransisco this fall, it seemed like the perfect time to pull out my old favorites and add some new picks, too. There’s nothing quite like a cozy sweater to help you get through 7 months of cold weather! This post contains affiliate links. This Asymmetrical Snap-Up Fleece is an oldie but goodie- it travels perfectly and is now available in even more colors.…

ORC Week 5: The Beach Cabin Sleeper Attic- DIY Roman Shades
Hi there! I can’t believe it’s already Week 5 of this challenge. It really great to see everyone’s projects for the One Room Challenge coming together! Check them out here. This week, I set out to DIY Roman Shades for the Sleeper Attic. Last summer, we didn’t have any window covering, so I thought not only would some roman shades add a little design on the far wall but they would also add a bit of privacy. I set out to follow some DIY No Sew directions using blinds (because I don’t own a sewing machine and barely own needles and thread. I went to the store, bought the least expensive…

ORC Week 4: The Beach Cabin Attic Makeover- A DIY-ish Preppy Pirate Boat
Hi again! The Beach Cabin is coming along for the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. (You can read more about the challenge as well as check in on the other participants here!). This is such a fun idea and is just what I needed to motivate me to finish the Beach Cabin Attic. There have been a few times throughout this challenge that I’ve wanted to stop, so it’s been nice to have such a supportive group to hold me accountable to finish it up. If you missed some of the fun things that happened last week, you can check…

Friday Finds on Mackinaw Road: A Tool to Systematically Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Hi and Happy Friday! I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m interested in having a capsule wardrobe. In fact, I may already have one inadvertently in the works…I find myself wearing the same outfits on repeat. And yet random clothing lingers. I think that I’ve also mentioned that we live in a 1920’s house. That means limited closet space. We’ve done well managing this, but I still feel that I could really put more clothes in the donation pile. But, where to start? *this post contains affiliate links.

ORC Week 2: The Beach Cabin Attic Floors
Hi there! Hope you are all doing well!! We are having a fun-filled week with field trips and dentist appointments. We did manage to get started painting the Beach Cabin floors for the ORC project this past weekend and I’m hoping to finish them up soon…. As a reminder, this is what the Beach Cabin Attic looked like previous to our purchase… And this is what the attic looked like when I shared the ORC: Week 1… A couple of things that I’ve been turning around in my head… In person, I actually love the white washed ceiling and walls. They were done so well by the previous owners and…

Kids Who Travel: Podcasts and Activities
I have to admit that I love having Kids Who Travel. Traveling with kids is great. To a point. It’s a lot of work but is worth it to see the world through fresh eyes. To catch the wonder and curiosity makes all of the planning worth it. I mentioned a few easy, non-Pinterest ways we make our travel flow in this post (click here). Our kids are now 5 and 8 years old and here are some additional tools that are useful as we travel both near and far… and even when we stay put. (This post contains affiliate links.)
