A Whimsical and Vintage Christmas
Never is there a time of year quite like Christmas when it is an “anything goes” sort of decorating situation. This year, I attempted a both whimsical and vintage Christmas. Velvet bows, red ornaments, paper snowflakes, dried oranges, and vintage danish plates all add to the sense of wonder from years past. A Vintage Christmas: The Living Room As you know from this post and this one and this one, red will always be incorporated into our living room Christmas decorations. We have so many red ornaments from our childhood and Christmas is such a nostalgic time of year that not putting them up isn’t an option. So, the tree…

A Red and Green Christmas… Again
Welp- it is official. I have been saying it for years and I guess I’m going to continue saying it for years to come. I cannot get away from a red and green (and plaid) Christmas. And, I’m not mad about it.

A Simple and Cozy Christmas
Happy Holidays! This year, I kept it fairly easy using decorations that I already had stored away, making for a Simple and Cozy Christmas. Well… not entirely simple. It took me three tries to take photographs. And of course I decided to do this in the midst of choir concerts, a flee market, and holiday parties. The decor was simple though! Thank goodness!!! A Simple and Cozy Christmas Living Room: Traditional Red and Green I had considered pulling out mint and/or coral from our living room rug into the Christmas decor. As I was taking out our ornaments, I just couldn’t do it. Red and Green (and all the ornament…

Kids’ Clothes, A Holiday Mantel & More
Today I’m sharing a sneak peek of our Christmas Mantel, a book that I’m listening to for the second time, a few ideas for kids’ clothes for the winter, a new-to-me brand, a Christmas Cabin wish list, and a favorite hotel. Oh, and I changed the name from Mackinaw Road Mondays to Mackinaw Road Musings, since I rarely seem to be able to actually get the posts out on Mondays.

Modern Traditional Christmas Kitchen
Hello and Happy Holidays! This time of year is always a whirlwind with holiday gatherings, kids’ concerts, school parties, and all of the fun!!! I’m currently trying, trying, trying to keep it simple in our Modern Traditional Christmas Kitchen. Also, admittedly, I ran out of time with my refusal to decorate until after Thanksgiving and the shorter span of weeks between it and Christmas. Sometimes routines are good, sometimes not so much. Oh well!

Christmas House Tour 2016
Well, as the picture above may indicate, this is not really, truly a travel post, and, yes, I will stretch it to make some connections, but in all honesty, this is a house tour. And my first one at that, so there are two things to forgive right there. While I’m apparently confessing, come on in, let me show you around, and share some decorating admissions, one for each day of Christmas. Admission #1: I love wooden signs! And just discovered a new small store in town that sells these made by local sisters. Aren’t they great? Admission #2: I am a plant killer. However, since discovering the beautiful…

6 Kid-Friendly Christmas Activities in Chicago
Every year at Christmastime, we head into Chicago for a weekend on the town. It is something that we all look forward to and is a great way to start the holiday season. Lincoln Park Zoo Lights- This year, our ETA into the city was around 5pm, so we decided to check out the lights at Lincoln Park Zoo (the sun sets super early in Chicago this time of year, and for once, I appreciated the early sunset). Admission to the zoo is free, but you may want to bring along some money for the hot chocolate stands along the way or the mulled wine you can get to-go from…

Global Christmas and Holiday Traditions in 2 hours or Less
This week we headed to our local gardens to check out their annual Christmas and Holiday Traditions from Around the World exhibit. If you happen to be in the Grand Rapids area, it is well worth the trip to Fredrick Meijer Gardens. And, I’ll be honest, I had a 3-year old with me, so it took us far less that 2 hours. Whenever I’m with my kids, I try to remember to give them a “job”; otherwise, they tend to find their own “jobs” that don’t always jive with what I had in mind. Today, the task was to find all of the displays from their 5 nationalities. All information shared…
